Michael Kawecki has been involved in sustainability for many years in many different roles. Throughout his career, he has had the opportunity to pursue sustainability both in his 'day' job as an employee of a firm and also in his 'night' job as a volunteer in the local USGBC Chapter. Michael found that one of the things he most enjoyed was educating the community and helping move the industry further by sharing lessons learned on past projects. And thus Axiom was born. Axiom Sustainable Consulting was started under the banner of Michael’s previous firm, O'Brien & Associates. By starting under O'Brien, an architectural services firm, he was able to immediately focus on the long term goals of Axiom and create several sustainable programs. As these were released into the marketplace, he was then able to focus on the 'behind the scenes' items of starting and launching a new company. As a provider of continuing education, it is important that our presentations are non-biased in nature, and do not promote or endorse materials, products, or services; real or perceived. Following this line of reasoning, Michael decided to incorporate this into Axiom's core structure and split from O’Brien & Associates. By being independent, this allows Axiom to reach even further into the design and construction community, and bring more offerings directly to those representing building owners, building designers, and construction personnel. Michael Kawecki, GA-C, LEED AP BD+C, ID+C, O+M With twelve years of experience in design and construction, Michael has performed various roles throughout his career including representation of the architect, owner, contractor and consultant roles. In addition to founding Axiom Sustainable Consulting, Michael was also a founding member of the USGBC North Texas Chapter in 2003, the 2007 Chair of the USGBC North Texas Chapter, and the 2008 Chair of the USGBC South Central Regional Council (covering Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma). He is also a LEED Accredited Professional with multiple specialties and Green Advantage Faculty. Additionally, Michael is involved in multiple pro-bono with USGBC and GBCI, including serving as a USGBC Education Reviewer and Auditor, and has also served as a Subject Matter Expert for development of the LEED Accreditation exams with the GBCI. Most recently, Michael participated on the LEED Specific Working Group under the USGBC which defined the criteria for LEED Specific Courses that are appoved for LEED Credential Maintenance. This involvement at the national level of the USGBC allows Michael to stay on the cutting edge of sustainable building trends. Previous Experience Previously as a Project Manager for the City of Dallas, Michael had the opportunity to pursue sustainable building projects on behalf of the City. He wrote the selection requirements for LEED consultants and Design/Builders for the Division, and managed the Division’s first LEED major renovation project – Hensley Field Operations Center. The 80,000 square foot facility was renovated into a vehicular maintenance center. It was the first LEED certified project in the City of Dallas, achieving Gold status. During that time, Michael was one of a dozen individuals who founded the North Texas Chapter of the USGBC. With a focus on educating the community, Michael has presented LEED to thousands of individuals over the last six years, including developers, contractors, product manufacturers, retailers, property and facility managers, educators, interior designers, architects and engineers. After leaving the City of Dallas, Michael joined Harrison, Walker & Harper as a Project Manager. Established over 100 years ago, Harrison, Walker & Harper is a prominent design/build general contractor based out of Paris, Texas, focusing on construction management services. HWH also has multiple sister companies that directly perform as subcontractors, including roofing, electrical, carpentry, millwork, and steel fabrication and erection. Similar to his role at the City of Dallas, Michael continued to mmanage architectural/engineering teams during the design process in addition to overseeing the construction process. During this time, Michael began teaching the Green Advantage Program, a construction based certification program focused on sustainable construction methods. In a three year period, Michael successfully trained over 1,200 contractors in the Dallas/ Ft. Worth area, and significantly contributed to the growth of the Green Advantage program.
