January 24, 2012 - State of the [GREEN] Union

Use 2011 was a busy year! The level of interest in sustainability and LEED continues to grow despite the effect that the recession is having on the design and construction industry. Looking across the nation, 3,500 commercial projects were LEED certified in 2011 bringing the total to over 11,000 certified commercial projects. Even more astounding, 5,400 residential projects were certified in 2011 bringing that total to over 14,600 certified residential projects. And there are still another 30,000+ commercial and 60,000+ residential projects registered through LEED. As we can see, LEED is here to stay.

In October of 2011, we finally saw the close of the voluntary two-year opt-in for LEED AP's w/o Specialty (also referred to as Legacy LEED AP's). As the opt-in period closed, only 61,000 Legacy LEED AP's had converted to the new LEED AP w/ Specialty credential which was less than half of those eligible. Considering the number of individuals who have left the building industry, these numbers aren't completely a surprise - although they are still lower than expected. The changes that were put in place with the new credentials ensures an individual's competency by being ANSI approved. So when starting your new projects this year, make sure you are utilizing LEED Professionals that are current with either a LEED Green Associate or a LEED AP w/ Specialty (BD+C, ID+C, O+M, Homes, ND). of the various 2009 LEED Rating Systems became more prevalent during 2010 as new projects began on the drawing boards. Much of the hype and fear regarding the new LEED Minimum Project Requirements was shown to be unfounded as stakeholders and volunteers continued to contribute and work out the kinks. Some interesting lawsuits regarding LEED were filed, but the validity is still to be determined.
